On December 4th, Volunteer Strathcona joined WESeniors Active Aging Series to speak to senior community members about volunteer opportunities in Strathcona County.
We linked with fellow colleagues from community organizations and made strong connections with new agencies. The volunteerism panel included Erin Wildeboer (Hodge Podge Lodge), Tracy Lockhart (Big Brothers Big Sisters) and Dyan Semple (Community Adult Learning and Literacy Society (CALLS) – all of whom had great stories to share about rewarding volunteer opportunities with their organizations.
We were inspired to hear about the work of Craft for YEG (local knitters and crocheters who make comfort items for premature babies, people experiencing homelessness, people going through cancer treatment and others.) Craft for YEG gathers at WESeniors on a weekly basis and spread their kindness through their incredible volunteer work with our community.
Moreover, Riley and Stan from Strathcona County’s new Men’s Shed shone a light on their programming and opportunities for seniors (including the occasion to participate as a group in small woodworking projects to help folks in our community). Their incredible program offers local senior men a space to connect, build relationships and support one another at weekly meetings in their ‘shed’ and at WESeniors.
