National Volunteer Week 2025 – April 27 to May 3

National Volunteer Week (April 27th to May 3rd, 2025) is a time to celebrate the incredible contributions of volunteers.

This year’s theme is Volunteers Make Waves – and volunteers are certainly making waves in Strathcona County!

  • Did you know that there are over 350 nonprofit organizations registered in Strathcona County?  Thousands of volunteers are behind those organizations, including the volunteer Board Members that govern and lead, and the frontline volunteers who role up their sleeves to help organizations drive their missions and serve our community.
  • Thirteen of those nonprofit organizations are Community Leagues – 100% volunteer run organizations that are instrumental in building community connection in Strathcona County.
  • Community members all over Strathcona County step up to host Block Parties, backyard concerts, book clubs and more, or to help out neighbours with tasks like snow shoveling and yard work, creating community in our neighbourhoods.  (fyi, Strathcona County’s Community Connection and Community Change Grants are open for applications if you want a boost to help you plan an event in your neighbourhood this year – they even have a great guide for hosting Block Parties – and don’t forget that Volunteer Strathcona has equipment loans for community events!)
  • Events like the Highland Gathering, the Ravenwood Music Festival, and Strathcona County’s Canada Day celebration would not be possible without the hundreds of volunteers who give their time to help at the events and behind the scenes.
  • Next year, Strathcona County will show the whole province how amazing our volunteers are during the Alberta Summer Games (July 16-19, 2026), where volunteers will help organize events in 13 different sports for athletes aged 11-16 from across Alberta.

No matter how someone volunteers, or how much time they have to give, every volunteer makes waves in Strathcona County by strengthening, transforming and uplifting our community.

We want to hear how you make waves in Strathcona County! We’ll be capturing your volunteerism on paper waves to show how volunteers are impacting our community.

We hope you’ll come by to see us at the Great Canadian Trade Fair (April 11 – 12th at Millennium Place) and the Volunteer Fair (April 28th from 4-7 p.m. in the Agora at the Strathcona County Community Centre) to add your wave!

From everyone at Volunteer Strathcona, a sincere Thank You to every volunteer for making waves and doing your part to help Strathcona County become Canada’s most livable community!
