Featured Story – September 2019

Eliesa came into our lives in May of this year and has brightened our office ever since. She is a part of Goodwill’s Career Connections, our newest partner, and through this program we had the opportunity to interview her for the role of Volunteer Receptionist which she now does 7 hours a week.  When she started, she had a Goodwill coach sit by her side her during her shifts but after a few short weeks, she became completely independent! Eliesa is 21 years old and has 2 brothers, one of which has signed up to volunteer with our LawnBusters and SnowBusters program as a result of her encouragement to join.

In 2016, she completed courses in Early Learning and Child-Care at MacEwan University and since joining our team, her experience here has inspired her to go back to school where she is now taking online Computer classes through NorQuest College!

Eliesa’s responsibilities with Volunteer Strathcona include helping with our Meals on Wheels program, creating promotional materials, as well as general front desk duties. She has become quite the asset to us in terms of her computer skills and her wonderful, personable nature. During a recent video interview with Eliesa, we asked what her favourite part is about her time at Volunteer Strathcona and she told us, “I like the people here and how nice they interact with the people that come through the door” and to that we say thank you! Keep up the amazing work, Eliesa!

Volunteer Strathcona is proud to partner with Goodwill’s Career Connections and to support inclusive hiring whether it’s volunteering or paid employment.  If you or your organization is interested in pursuing a partnership with Volunteer Strathcona, please contact Judy Ferguson at ED@volunteerstrathcona.ca.
